Adware is a True Problem for the Average Internet User
by guest on Feb.13, 2010, under Blog
Adware is one of the curses of the online age. It seems to creep up on people and hide itself inside their personal computers, continually pestering them with advertisings for items that they commonly don’t want. Generally the ads are just absolutely unacceptable as well. The only good news about adware in recent years is that technology is starting to catch up with it, making it less difficult to keep it at bay.
Still, adware is all over the place and is a continuous threat. It’s got to the point that whenever some people see ads on their computer system they get concerned. Here are the undesirable things about adware overall:
Adware can be covert:
It can get to your computer system through sly means. People can go on-line and obtain things that they feel are safe only to find out that they’ve accidentally installed something that’s designed to do nothing more than harass them with ads whenever they turn on their computer. This is not only wrong and annoying, but it makes it so that no one can really feel at ease about browsing the net anymore because everything has to be questioned.
It is often designed to spy:
Adware works best when the ads can be targeted at individual users. In order to target the ads best the software tracks what a computer user does when on the internet. By knowing the web browsing habits and other such things, the most appropriate ads for the user can be delivered. In theory that’s great except for two points: the first is that the user may not want the ads in the first place and the second is that the user is almost always unaware that such spying is taking place.
Adware is often offensive:
They say that the internet was built on pornography, and a lot of people will tell you that that’s true. By now there are so many websites offering pornography and sex related products and services that no one could ever make an accurate count. That means it’s an incredibly lucrative yet competitive industry. The result is that makers of adware often try to get a piece of that pie by delivering those ads to your computer. Suddenly computer users find themselves being bombarded by unwanted ads that they can’t get rid of that are full of offensive imagery.
Adware can hurt the computer:
In the worst cases, adware infiltrates computers in the worst of ways. It buries itself deep within the system making it impossible for less tech savvy people to get rid of. Even computer experts often have trouble erasing it from a computer system, and the result is having to completely wipe a computer clean and set it up all over again.
It costs people money:
To fight all of these hassles people need to have anit spyware software running on their personal computer at all times. Not only does this slow the computer down, but the better antispyware software costs money. While this is great for the antivirus industry, it’s just unfair for everyday computer users who simply want to run an affordable system.
