Current Allowable Automobile Mileage Tax Deduction 2009, 2010

by guest on Apr.24, 2010, under Blog

Another great advantage to itemizing your tax return is the deductions you can receive from claiming your vehicle mileage. There are many reasons that your mileage may be tax deductible. You can choose to take these optional standard rates if you are an employee, self-employed, and all other taxpayers if you have vehicle operating costs that fall into tax deductible categories.

What is Deductible?

Miles Driven for Business

Medical Travel Mileage

Moving Travel Mileage

Servicing for Charitable Organization Mileage

How Much Can I Deduct

50.5 Cents Per Mile For Business

14 Cents Per Mile For Charitable

20 Cents Per Mile For Medical

20 Cents Per Mile For Moving

The rate for business travel has recently increased. It was previously at 48.5 cents per mile for 2007. Due to the current state of the economy the IRS has offered an even higher tax break that will cover mileage deductions from July 1st, 2008 through December 31st, 2008. The rate for business purposes for this six month window will be 58.5 cents per mile.

The rate for moving or medical purposes for this six month window will be 27 cents per mile. The deduction for charitable travel will remain the same. The reasons for this increase are the higher price with fuel and the increased price of vehicles. The standard rate for business, moving, and medical comes from an annual study that is done to determine the costs of operating a vehicle. The IRS will usually hire an outside company to complete this study.

How to Find an Auto Repair Shop

by guest on Sep.29, 2009, under Blog

Virtually all vehicles will need at least one major automotive repair in its lifetime. Finding the right repair shop is an important issue. Nobody likes to spend more than necessary, especially as the economy is going into a tailspin, and money is becoming more scarce. Some car repair shops specialize in providing quality workmanship at reasonable prices. Others, like many car dealer shops for instance, specialize in going the extra mile - and charging you for it - when it is not necessary

Look for shops that display various certifications - like an Automotive Service Excellence seal, for example. Certification means that some or all of the technicians meet basic standards of knowledge and competence in specific technical areas.

Check to see that the certifications are up to date, but remember that certification alone is no guarantee of good or honest work. Don’t be afraid to ask if the technician or shop has experience working on your specific make and model of vehicle.

Another excellent way to find a quality repair shop is to ask friends and co-workers where they choose to take their own cars for automotive repair. And of course another good place to check for more information about car repair shops in your area is the Better Business Bureau.

The majority of vehicles will need at least one big repair job before they are retired. If you don’t already have a regular car repair shop you should spend some time looking for one. Price is important to everyone. With the current state of the economy in the United States and elsewhere, many people are making less and spending more and more on day to day products and services so it is important to find the best value when it comes to car repair and service.

Believe it or not, some car shops are quite willing to take advantage of inexperienced car owners. One of their favorite tricks of shady operators is selling you parts and service that you don’t really need. When your car is in pieces spread all over the shop and the mechanic tells you it needs a bunch of new parts there’s not much you can do about it. They more or less have you at their mercy. Don’t kid yourself. This happens all the time.
